# Al-Hakam

**الْحَكَمُ** — The Judge

The absolute arbiter who distinguishes truth from falsehood, passing judgment with perfect justice.

**Source:** En'âm 6:114 (6:114)

**Virtue:** Al-Hakam declares that the authority to judge belongs to Allah alone; the final ruling is His. In Surah al-An'am 6:114 He says: 'Shall I seek a judge other than Allah—when it is He who has revealed to you the Book, explained in detail?' The servant who reflects on this name lets go of judging others in their heart, seeing the distance between Allah's decree and human judgment. When disputes arise, they return to the Quran and Sunnah rather than to dissension—knowing the true Judge is Allah. The Companion known as 'Abu Shurayh' had his kunyah changed by the Prophet after he learned the title 'al-Hakam' belongs only to Allah.

He said: 'You are Abu Shurayh.'
