# Ar-Ra'uf

**الرَّؤُوفُ** — The Clement

The One of extreme compassion, showing extraordinary tenderness and gentleness toward His servants.

**Source:** Bakara 2:207 (2:207)

**Virtue:** Ar-Ra'uf declares that Allah is most compassionate and merciful—He cannot bear to see the hardship of His servants. In Surah al-Baqarah 2:143 He says: 'Indeed, Allah is most compassionate and merciful to people.' Ar-Ra'uf expresses a deeper compassion than Ar-Rahim—as if Allah lives the servant's every pain with them. The servant who reflects on this name knows Allah is not indifferent to their own pain—they find consolation. At the same time, they develop a compassionate character toward those around them, never staying indifferent to another's hardship.
