## About this surah

Surah Al-'Asr is the one-hundred-third surah of the Quran; in just three verses it sets out the four essentials of salvation: faith, righteous deeds, counseling one another to truth, and counseling one another to patience. The surah takes its name from the word 'asr, by which the oath of its opening verse is sworn and which carries the senses of time, the late afternoon, and the age. After the oath by time, it declares that the human being is truly in loss, excepting only those who believe, do righteous deeds, and counsel one another to truth and to patience. Though among the shortest surahs of the Quran, it frames the entire architecture of a believing life, reminding today's reader that time is the most precious capital and that what fills it determines eternity.

### Revelation context

Surah Al-'Asr was revealed in the Meccan period, in the early years of the Prophet's mission. Its compressed intensity, its opening oath, and its emphasis on faith joined to action are characteristic of the early Meccan surahs. No specific occasion of revelation is reported; the surah pronounces a timeless verdict on the human condition.

### Main themes

The surah's central theme is humanity's loss and the way out of it. Verse 103:1 swears by time; 103:2 declares categorically that the human being is in loss. Verse 103:3 then states the exception: faith, righteous deeds, counseling one another to truth, and counseling one another to patience. This fourfold framework binds personal belief and ethics to social responsibility, showing that salvation is achieved not through private piety alone but through a solidarity that spreads truth and steadfastness.

### Virtues

Imam al-Shafi'i is famously reported to have remarked that if people truly reflected on this surah, it would suffice them, an assessment often cited to convey its comprehensiveness. Some sources also relate that Companions would recite Surah Al-'Asr to one another before parting. The surah has thus held a special place in Muslim culture as a charter of mutual counsel.

> وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ

> إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَفِي خُسۡرٍ
