الْبَاسِطُ
Al-Basit
The One who expands provision, opens the heart, and extends His mercy to whomever He wills, granting abundance.
Bakara 2:245
Al-Basit declares that Allah is the One who, whenever He wills, expands provisions, restores health, broadens hearts, and pours abundance into souls. Paired with Al-Qabid, this name teaches that every condition of the servant is in His hand. When the people of Medina complained about rising prices, the Prophet (peace be upon him) answered: 'It is Allah alone who constricts and expands,' affirming that every relief—material and spiritual—flows from Him. The servant who invokes Al-Basit directs the gratitude for any ease back to Allah, and aspires toward a generous, openhearted character that mirrors the divine expansion.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the people of Medina asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) to fix prices, he answered: 'It is Allah alone who fixes prices—the Constrictor (Al-Qabid), the Expander (Al-Basit), the Provider.' He further said that he did not wish to meet his Lord while any of them claimed an injustice from him in life or property.
