الْجَلِيلُ
Al-Jalil
The One who possesses infinite grandeur and awe-inspiring majesty that transcends all comprehension.
Al-Jalil declares that Allah possesses majesty, grandeur, and awe-inspiring greatness. This name is held alongside the divine attribute of beauty (al-Jamal): Allah is the Possessor of both beauty and majesty. In Surah ar-Rahman 55:78 He says: 'Blessed is the name of your Lord, Possessor of Majesty and Honor.' The servant who reflects on this name approaches Allah not only with love but also with deep reverence and awe. Fear and hope balance in the believer's heart—a servant carrying only hope grows slack; one carrying only fear despairs. Al-Jalil establishes this balance.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: In times of hardship the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite often: 'Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith'—O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek aid.
