الْحَيُّ
Al-Hayy
The One who possesses eternal, self-subsisting life—never subject to death or cessation.
Bakara 2:255
Al-Hayy declares that Allah is eternally and everlastingly Living—He neither sleeps nor rests, and His life has no beginning or end. Ayat al-Kursi opens with this name: 'Allah, there is no god but He; the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining' (Al-Baqarah 2:255). All living beings carry a spark of His life; but His life is unconditioned, limitless, and absolute. The servant who reflects on this name calls upon Him: 'Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith' (O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek aid). The servant who remembers Allah's eternal living-ness knows their own temporary life is dependent on Him.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: In times of hardship the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite often: 'Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi-rahmatika astaghith' (O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek aid).
