الْقَيُّومُ
Al-Qayyum
The One who exists by His own essence and upon whom all of creation depends for its continued existence.
Bakara 2:255
Al-Qayyum declares that Allah exists by Himself, needs nothing else, while everything else depends on Him for its sustenance. He is invoked in Ayat al-Kursi alongside Al-Hayy (Al-Baqarah 2:255): 'Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him.' All existence stands because of Al-Qayyum—were He to withdraw His sustaining for a moment, the cosmos would collapse where it stands. The servant who reflects on this name remembers how dependent their own strength is, knows they cannot stand alone, and counts every breath as a thanks to Al-Qayyum.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah's hand is full; no expenditure diminishes it. He continues to give generously night and day. Consider all He has given since He created the heavens and the earth—what is in His right hand has not diminished at all.'
