الشَّهِيدُ
Ash-Shahid
The One who witnesses all things, to whom nothing is hidden in heaven or on earth.
Mâide 5:117
Ash-Shahid declares that Allah is the perpetual witness over all things; no deed escapes His oversight. In Surah al-Ma'idah 5:117 Prophet 'Isa (peace be upon him) says: 'You were a Witness over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.' This name also points to the Day of Judgment, when Allah will appear as Witness in person—no other witness is needed. The servant who reflects on this name carries the same honesty even when alone—because Allah is the Witness. Though there be no camera, though no one sees, Ash-Shahid sees in every moment.
Gabriel (peace be upon him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about ihsan. He replied: 'It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for though you do not see Him, indeed He sees you.'
