Salah is one of the five pillars of Islam, holding a central place in every Muslim's life. Prescribed five times a day, prayer represents the most intimate connection between a person and their Creator.
The Place of Prayer Times in Islam
The Quran clearly establishes the times for prayer. The five daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — are distributed throughout the day, weaving worship into the fabric of a Muslim's entire day. Each prayer serves as a pause point and a moment of reflection.
— Surah An-Nisa, 103Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
The Diyanet Calculation Method
In Turkey, prayer times are determined using the calculation method established by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet). This method uses astronomical calculations based on the sun's position and provides minute-accurate times for all 81 provinces based on their geographic coordinates.
The key factors considered in the calculation process include:
- Latitude and longitude: The sun's rise and set angles vary according to each city's geographic position.
- Altitude: Elevation above sea level affects the horizon line and consequently the prayer times.
- Seasonal variations: Daylight duration changes significantly between summer and winter months.
- Atmospheric refraction: The bending of light in the atmosphere affects the sun's apparent position.
The Importance of Accurate Time Tracking
Praying at the correct time is a condition for the validity of prayer. A prayer performed before its time has entered is not considered valid, while one performed after its time has passed is considered a makeup prayer. Therefore, having an accurate and reliable prayer time source is of great importance for every Muslim.
The VAAZ app provides the most accurate prayer times for all 81 provinces of Turkey using the Diyanet calculation method. With location-based automatic city detection, countdown to the next prayer, and notification features, you'll never miss a prayer.
Building a Daily Prayer Routine
Establishing a regular prayer routine is one of the cornerstones of spiritual development. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
- Develop a habit of waking up at the same time every day so you don't miss the morning prayer.
- Enable prayer time reminder notifications.
- Plan your work or school schedule around prayer times.
- Add a short dua and dhikr routine after each prayer.
Prayer is not just an act of worship but also an opportunity to detach from the stress of daily life and find inner peace. Performing each prayer consciously and with devotion provides great benefits both spiritually and psychologically.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I miss a prayer time?
A prayer not performed within its prescribed time must be made up as a qada' (makeup prayer) as soon as possible — there is no need to wait for the next prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him perform it when he remembers; that is its only expiation" (al-Bukhārī, Mawaqit 597). The makeup is prayed with only the obligatory rak'ahs, without the sunnahs associated with the original time.
What is the difference between imsak and Fajr time?
Imsak is the safety margin shown in Diyanet prayer calendars a few minutes before the true Fajr (fajr al-sadiq), placed as a buffer for fasting Muslims to stop eating and drinking. True Fajr is the obligatory time for the Fajr prayer — from this point onwards one may begin the prayer (Muslim, Masajid 284). In practice the gap between the two is typically 10–15 minutes.
Why do prayer times differ from city to city?
Prayer times are calculated from the sun's rising and setting angles and therefore vary according to each city's latitude, longitude, and altitude. In Surah Hud Allah commands: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night" (Hud 11:114), showing that prayer times are tied directly to the sun's movement. Two cities in the same time zone may therefore have noticeably different prayer times if one is mountainous or coastal.
