سورة العلق

Alak

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah Al-'Alaq is the 96th surah of the Quran, comprising 19 verses. It treats the beginning of revelation, the worth of reading and the pen, the insolence of the human being who deems himself self-sufficient, and the path of servanthood crowned with prostration. Its first five verses are the first revelation that came to the Prophet in the cave of Hira: 'Read, in the name of your Lord who created!' This opening binds knowledge to the consciousness of creation, declaring that the human being was created from a clinging form and that the Most Generous Lord taught by the pen. The rest of the surah turns to the human being who transgresses upon seeing himself self-sufficient, and to the tyrant who would prevent a servant from praying. Ending with the command 'Prostrate and draw near,' the surah is read as the founding source of Islamic civilization's devotion to knowledge.

Revelation & background

Surah Al-'Alaq is Meccan. It is firmly established in authentic sources that its first five verses were the first revelation, received by the Prophet in the cave of Hira; the surah thus marks the starting point of the Quran's revelation. The later verses are reported to have come afterward, concerning a Meccan notable — identified in the commentaries with Abu Jahl — who tried to prevent the Prophet from praying.

Major themes

Its main themes are revelation, knowledge, the human capacity for transgression, and servanthood. The command 'Read, in the name of your Lord who created' and the emphasis on teaching by the pen (96:1-5) trace knowledge and worship to the same source. The observation that man transgresses when he sees himself self-sufficient (96:6-7) is a timeless diagnosis of the intoxication of wealth and power, bounded by the reminder that the return is to your Lord (96:8). The warning to the tyrant who prevents a servant from praying (96:9-19) declares that oppression stands under divine watch. The final verse is a verse of prostration: 'Prostrate and draw near' (96:19) points the way to closeness with God.
