Surah Al-Qari'ah is the one-hundred-first surah of the Quran, comprising eleven verses on the terror of the Last Day, the weighing of deeds, and humanity's final destinations. The surah takes its name from the word qari'ah, 'the striking calamity,' one of the names of the Day of Judgment. It describes a Day when people are like scattered moths and the mountains like tufts of carded wool. Those whose scales weigh heavy enter a pleasing life, while those whose scales weigh light find their refuge in the abyss called hawiyah, a raging fire. With striking imagery, the surah reminds today's reader that the choices of this life will be placed on a scale in The Hereafter, and that what endures is the weight of one's deeds.
