لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
Bu şehre (Mekke'ye) yemin ederim; ki sen bu şehirde oturmuşsun

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Surah Al-Balad is the 90th surah of the Quran, comprising 20 verses. It treats the human being's creation into toil, the accountability that comes with blessings, and the path of virtue the surah calls the steep ascent. God opens by swearing by 'this city' — Mecca, where the Prophet himself dwelt — and declares that the human being was created in hardship. To the one who boasts of squandering wealth, the surah recalls the two eyes, the tongue, and the lips he was given, and the two paths shown to him. The steep ascent is then defined: freeing a slave, feeding an orphan or a needy person on a day of hunger, and being among those who believe and counsel one another to patience and compassion. Binding personal piety to social solidarity, the surah remains a forceful lesson in social ethics today.
Revelation & background
Surah Al-Balad is Meccan, dated to the early years of the Meccan period. The commentaries note that the city sworn by is Mecca, and that the oath alludes to a time when the Prophet, though a resident of that sacred city, saw its sanctity violated in his own person. The surah answers the mindset of Meccan notables intoxicated by wealth and standing.
Major themes
Its main themes are the human being's creation for trial, the reckoning of blessings, and the steep ascent as the price of virtue. 'We have certainly created man into hardship' (90:4) is a sober statement about the nature of life. The reminder of the eyes, the tongue, and the lips, and of the two paths shown (90:8-10), grounds human accountability. Defining the steep ascent as freeing slaves and feeding the orphan and the poor on a day of hunger (90:11-16) fuses worship with social justice, while the counsel of faith, patience, and compassion (90:17) draws the shared identity of the believers.

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

وَوَالِدࣲ وَمَا وَلَدَ
Doğurana ve doğurduğuna and olsun ki

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
İnsanoğlunu, zorluklara katlanacak şekilde yarattık

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدࣱ
İnsanoğlu, kendisine kimsenin güç yetiremeyeceğini mi sanıyor
690:6
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالࣰ ا لُّبَدًا
Yığın yığın mal tüketmişimdir" diyor
790:7
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
O, kimsenin kendisini görmediğini mi zannediyor

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
Biz onun için iki göz, bir dil ve iki dudak var etmedik mi

وَلِسَانࣰ ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
Biz onun için iki göz, bir dil ve iki dudak var etmedik mi

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
Biz ona eğri ve doğru iki yolu da göstermedik mi

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
Ama o, zor geçidi aşmaya girişemedi

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
O zor geçidin ne olduğunu sen bilir misin

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
O geçit, bir köle ve esir azadetmek

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمࣱ فِي يَوۡمࣲ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةࣲ
Yahut, açlık gününde, yakını olan bir öksüzü, yahut toprağa serilmiş bir yoksulu doyurmaktır

يَتِيمࣰ ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ
Yahut, açlık gününde, yakını olan bir öksüzü, yahut toprağa serilmiş bir yoksulu doyurmaktır

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينࣰ ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةࣲ
Yahut, açlık gününde, yakını olan bir öksüzü, yahut toprağa serilmiş bir yoksulu doyurmaktır
1790:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
Sonra, inanıp birbirlerine sabır tavsiye edenlerden, merhametlilerden olmayı tavsiye edenlerden olmaktır

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
İşte bunlar amel defterleri sağdan verilenlerdir
1990:19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
Ayetlerimizi inkar edenler, işte onlar amel defterleri sollarından verilenlerdir
2090:20
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارࣱ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
Onlar her yönden ateşle kapatılacaklardır
