İnfitar

Surah Al-Infitar is the eighty-second surah of the Quran, comprising nineteen verses on the scenes of the Last Day that open with the splitting of the sky, man's delusion regarding his generous Lord, the recording angels, and the Day of Reckoning. Brief and concentrated, it addresses the human being directly: "O man, what has deceived you concerning your generous Lord?" — a question aimed at every age's tendency to drift into ingratitude amid abundance. The surah declares that the God who created man and fashioned him in due proportion has appointed noble scribes to record all that he does. For readers today it teaches living in the awareness that no deed goes unrecorded, and making God's generosity a reason for gratitude rather than heedlessness.

Revelation & background

Al-Infitar is a Meccan surah, generally placed in the early Meccan years, when the themes of resurrection and reckoning dominated revelation. No specific occasion of revelation is transmitted. It stands at the center of the trilogy with At-Takwir and Al-Inshiqaq depicting the cosmic dissolution of the Last Day, and it shares the admonitory register of that period.

Major themes

The surah opens with four scenes of the Last Day: the sky split apart, the stars scattered, the seas burst forth, the graves overturned — and on that Day each soul learns what it sent ahead and what it left behind (82:1-5). The question "O man, what has deceived you concerning your generous Lord?" (82:6) forms its moral center. Man's being composed in whatever form God willed testifies to divine power and grace. Honored scribes — the kiraman katibin — knowingly record every deed (82:10-12). The righteous dwell in bliss; those sunk in sin are in Hellfire. The surah ends by reminding that on that Day no soul can avail another, and the command belongs to God alone (82:19).

Virtues

A narration transmitted by al-Tirmidhi commends Surahs At-Takwir, Al-Infitar, and Al-Inshiqaq to whoever wishes to contemplate the Day of Resurrection as though seeing it with his own eyes. Al-Infitar stands at the center of this trio and has long been recited for reflection on the Hereafter.
