Surah At-Tariq is the 86th surah of the Quran, comprising 17 verses. It teaches that every soul has a watcher over it, that resurrection is certain, and that the Quran is a decisive word separating truth from falsehood. Opening with an oath by the sky and by the piercing night-star, at-Tariq, it calls the human being to reflect on his own creation: the God who created him from a simple fluid is surely able to bring him back to life. On the Day when secrets are laid bare, no power and no helper will avail. With its short, rhythmic cadence, the surah reminds the modern reader that life is not left unsupervised — every deed is recorded and the reckoning is inescapable.

'There is no soul without a watcher over it' (86:4) is a concentrated statement of the consciousness of divine oversight. The creation of the human being from an emitted fluid (86:5-7) feeds a chain of reflection in which the first creation becomes proof of the second; the Day when innermost secrets are examined (86:9) extends the reckoning to all that is hidden. The declaration that the Quran is a decisive word and no jest (86:13-14) crowns the surah, while the command to grant the deniers a brief respite (86:17) places even delay within the divine plan.
