سورة الأعلى

Ala

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah Al-A'la is the 87th surah of the Quran, comprising 19 verses. It treats the glorification of God's most exalted name, the power of the Lord who creates, proportions, and guides, the safekeeping of revelation, and the success of the soul that purifies itself. Opening with the command 'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,' it lines up the divine acts of creating, measuring, and guiding to point to the order running through the universe. The Prophet is assured that he will not forget the revelation and is told to remind wherever the reminder benefits. Those who prefer the life of this world are admonished, while whoever purifies himself, remembers his Lord's name, and prays is declared successful. The surah closes by noting that this same message stood in the scrolls of Abraham and Moses, underscoring the historical continuity of revelation.

Revelation & background

Surah Al-A'la is Meccan, dated to the early years of the Meccan period. At a time when revelation was still new, the surah gave the Prophet the assurance 'We shall make you recite, and you will not forget' (87:6), settling anxiety over the memorization and preservation of the revelation. Its short verses and rhythmic cadence bear the marks of the early Meccan surahs.

Major themes

Its principal themes are glorification, divine order, the safekeeping of revelation, and the purification of the soul. The portrait of the Lord who creates, proportions, decrees, and guides (87:1-3) turns the order of nature into evidence for faith. 'Remind, if the reminder benefits' (87:9) sets the measure of conveying the message. The verses 'Successful is the one who purifies himself, remembers the name of his Lord, and prays' (87:14-15) form the summit of the surah, against which the preference for this world over the Hereafter is rebuked (87:16-17). That the same message stood in the scrolls of Abraham and Moses (87:18-19) shows the call to God's oneness as the shared inheritance of all prophets.

Virtues

Authentic sources relate that the Prophet held this surah dear, reciting it in the first rak'ah of the Witr prayer and in the Friday and Eid prayers. Its brevity and concentrated message have made it one of the surahs most frequently recited in daily worship.
