Tayammum is among the clearest expressions of the ease Islam grants the believer: when water is absent or unusable, worship is not suspended but carried on with clean earth. This guide explains when, with what, and how tayammum is performed, grounded in the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
What Is Tayammum?
Linguistically, tayammum means "to turn toward" or "to intend" something. As a legal term, it is the ritual purification performed when water is unavailable or cannot be used, in order to remove a state of ritual impurity — whether the minor state requiring wudu or the major state (janabah) requiring ghusl — by wiping the face and both arms with hands struck against clean earth or an earth-like substance. Tayammum thus stands in for the ablution ordinarily done with water. It is not an act of worship in itself but a concession (rukhsah) granted so that worship can proceed.
This concession signals that the religion is not a burden but a relief. The same wisdom runs through our guides on How to Perform Wudu and How to Perform Ghusl; tayammum can substitute for either.
The Qur'anic Basis for Tayammum
Tayammum is a ruling grounded directly in the Qur'an. Both Surah al-Nisa and Surah al-Ma'idah state what is to be done when no water can be found:
— Surah al-Nisa, 43...but if you are ill or on a journey, or one of you has relieved himself, or you have had contact with women and can find no water, then turn to clean earth and (intending it) wipe your faces and your hands with it.
The verse listing the obligations of wudu in Surah al-Ma'idah repeats the same concession and states its purpose:
— Surah al-Ma'idah, 6...if you are ill or on a journey, or one of you has relieved himself, or you have had contact with women and can find no water, then turn to clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it. Allah does not wish to place you in hardship.
The closing clause captures the ruling's whole rationale: Allah wills ease for His servants, not difficulty.
The Prophet's Practice
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself demonstrated how tayammum is done. In a report from the Companion Ammar ibn Yasir, after he reminded 'Umar of a journey on which he had found no water and rolled in the dust to pray, the Messenger of Allah taught him the simplicity of tayammum:
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Tayammum, no. 338The Prophet (peace be upon him) struck the earth lightly with his hands, then blew off the dust, and wiped his face and the backs of his hands with them.
This hadith shows tayammum to be an easy, unadorned preparation for worship that anyone can perform. Basing themselves on the Prophet's practice, the scholars derived its method by reading the verse and the hadith together.
When May Tayammum Be Performed?
According to the Diyanet (the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs), tayammum is valid when one of two conditions is present:
- The absence of water: Not having clean water sufficient for wudu or ghusl. This is met on a journey, in a desert, or wherever reaching water within a reasonable distance is not possible.
- A valid excuse preventing the use of water: Even when water is present, being unable to use it for a religiously recognized reason — such as serious illness, well-founded fear that water would worsen a sickness, extreme cold and risk of freezing, or danger to life in reaching the water.
The Obligatory Acts (Fard) of Tayammum
In essence, tayammum consists of wiping the face and arms with palms struck against clean earth. It therefore has three obligatory acts:
- Intention (niyyah): To intend in the heart which purification tayammum is being performed for — in place of wudu or in place of ghusl. Intention is what distinguishes tayammum from ordinary movements.
- Wiping the face: Wiping the entire face — from the forehead to below the chin, from one ear to the other — with the hands struck against the earth.
- Wiping the arms to the elbows: Wiping both arms, including the elbows.
If any one of these three is missing, the tayammum is not valid.
Step by Step
A tayammum performed according to the Sunnah proceeds as follows:
- Form the intention in your heart, specifying which purification it replaces.
- Say the basmala: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."
- Strike the palms of both hands, fingers apart, against clean earth (or a clean earth-like surface).
- Raise the hands and lightly shake off any excess dust.
- Wipe the whole face once with the inner surfaces of both hands.
- Strike the earth a second time.
- With the inner surface of the left hand, wipe the right arm from the fingertips to the elbow, then wipe the left arm the same way with the right hand.
What Materials Are Valid?
Tayammum is performed with clean substances of the earth's kind: soil, sand, stone, lime, brick, and tile fall within this. Wood, copper, iron, and glass — things that melt, burn, or are not earth-like — cannot be used. However, if a layer of clean dust has settled on such objects, tayammum with that dust is valid. The surface used must be clean and free of impurity (najasah).
What Invalidates Tayammum
Tayammum is invalidated by two categories of cause:
- Everything that breaks wudu also breaks tayammum: relieving oneself, breaking wind, deep sleep, fainting, and the like. A tayammum made to lift the state of janabah is broken by whatever brings about that major state again.
- The lapse of tayammum's specific excuse: the availability of water, or the ending of an excuse such as an illness that prevented using it. The moment water is obtained, the ruling of tayammum ends and wudu or ghusl with water is again required.
Some Differences Among the Schools
The scholars agree on the essential method of tayammum, with some differences in detail. According to the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools, the arms are wiped including the elbows and the earth is struck twice (once for the face, once for the arms). According to the Maliki and Hanbali schools, the obligation is to wipe the hands to the wrists, while wiping to the elbows is recommended (sunnah/mustahabb). Knowing these differences is useful, especially when worshipping in different regions.
Keep Your Worship on Time
The whole purpose of tayammum is that no excuse should bring worship to a complete halt. Even when water is unavailable, the prayer can be prayed on time.
