What to know about Day of Ashura
The Day of Ashura is the tenth of Muharram. The Prophet (pbuh) fasted on it and encouraged others to do so; once the Ramadan fast was made obligatory, the Ashura fast became voluntary. Ashura pudding, which the Ottoman palace used to distribute, takes its name from this day.
Day of Ashura dates, 2027 to 2034
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the date moves earlier every year. Dates for 2026 and 2027 follow the list Diyanet has published; later ones are estimates.

|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Tuesday, June 15, 2027 | 10 Muharram 1449 |

In a hadith reported by Muslim, the Ashura fast is hoped to expiate the sins of the previous year.

According to the Diyanet board, Ashura is not fasted on its own: two days may be fasted, the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram, or three days if one wishes. According to the TDV Encyclopedia, the Hanafis regard fasting on the tenth alone as makruh.

Ashura pudding is a custom that the Ottoman palace used to distribute. As the Çankaya Mufti's Office notes, there is no authentic report that connects cooking it with the day of Ashura.
