What to know about Laylat al-Bara'ah

Laylat al-Bara'ah is the night of mid-Sha'ban. 'Bara'ah' means release from an obligation and freedom from guilt, and believers hope for forgiveness on this night. The chains of the narrations about it are considered weak. It falls about two weeks before Ramadan, a stop on the way of spiritual preparation.

Diyanet's list gives a Blessed Night under the date of the evening on which it begins. According to the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, the date of a Blessed Night always belongs to the day that follows the night, so the night begins with the evening ezan of the listed day.

What is known about this night

The notes come from Diyanet and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam. Where schools differ, the Hanafi view used in Türkiye is given together with the others.

  • Bara'ah is the night of 15 Sha'ban. The word means release from an obligation and freedom from guilt, and believers hope for forgiveness on this night.

    Source: TDV, Bara'ah Night

  • The TDV Encyclopedia notes that the chains of the hadiths about this night are weak. No special prayer is prescribed for it either; the hundred-rak'ah prayer reported by al-Ghazali was rejected by al-Nawawi and al-Iraqi as baseless.

  • Scholars agree that prayer, Quran recitation and supplication on this night can bring reward, while holding that inventing special rites or celebrations for it and making them customary has no place in religion.

  • The Prophet (pbuh) did not prescribe a special prayer or form of worship for the Blessed Nights. According to Türkiye's Diyanet Higher Board of Religious Affairs, these nights are used to review one's life, repent, make supplication, read and reflect on the Quran, and pray make-up or voluntary prayers.

  • The same fatwa holds that fasting on the day after a Blessed Night is recommended (mustahab).
