The Prophet (pbuh) is known to have fasted a great deal in Sha'ban, and it is narrated that the best fast outside Ramadan is the one kept in Sha'ban. Most scholars consider it recommended.

The report of the prayer 'O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha'ban and let us reach Ramadan' is cited in a Diyanet Friday sermon from al-Tabarani (al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, IV/189) and Ahmad ibn Hanbal (Musnad, I/259). Its chain is weak, and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam also regards it as weak; it may be recited as a dua.
