What to know about Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr is the night the Quran's revelation began, described in Surah Al-Qadr as 'better than a thousand months'. It is sought on the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, and most Muslims hold that it falls on the 27th night.

Diyanet's list gives a Blessed Night under the date of the evening on which it begins. According to the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, the date of a Blessed Night always belongs to the day that follows the night, so the night begins with the evening ezan of the listed day.

What is known about this night

The notes come from Diyanet and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam. Where schools differ, the Hanafi view used in Türkiye is given together with the others.

  • Which night is Laylat al-Qadr is not known for certain. According to the TDV Encyclopedia it is sought on the odd nights of the last ten (or seven) days of Ramadan, and since many reports point to the 27th night, that is the night most often observed.

  • Surah Al-Qadr calls the night 'better than a thousand months'. Commentators differ on its meaning: some take the night's worth to lie in what is done in it, others read 'a thousand months' as an expression of abundance.

  • It is reported that in the last ten days of Ramadan the Prophet (pbuh) went into i'tikaf, spent his nights in more worship, and woke his family for worship. According to a hadith, whoever keeps this night alive in faith and hope of reward is forgiven his past sins.

  • The Prophet (pbuh) did not prescribe a special prayer or form of worship for the Blessed Nights. According to Türkiye's Diyanet Higher Board of Religious Affairs, these nights are used to review one's life, repent, make supplication, read and reflect on the Quran, and pray make-up or voluntary prayers.
