What to know about Start of Ramadan

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran began to be revealed and fasting was ordained. The first fast begins on this day; suhoor and iftar follow each city's own timetable.

The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the date moves earlier every year. Dates for 2026 and 2027 follow the list Diyanet has published; later ones are estimates.

What is done on this day?

The notes come from Diyanet and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam. Where schools differ, the Hanafi view used in Türkiye is given together with the others.

  • Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory (fard).

  • The intention is a condition of the fast. It can be made in the heart, and saying it aloud is recommended; getting up for suhoor also counts as the intention. Each day of Ramadan needs its own intention, and making it at night and naming the day is more virtuous.

  • The Tarawih prayer is sunnah mu'akkadah for men and women. In Ramadan it can be prayed after Isha until dawn, and giving the salam after every two rak'ahs is more virtuous.

  • The start of Ramadan is given by Diyanet's Hijri month calculation. In countries that look for the crescent only within their own borders, Ramadan and the Eids can begin a day earlier or later.
