What to know about Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha is the four-day festival honouring the devotion of Abraham (10 to 13 Dhul Hijjah), marked by the Eid prayer, the sacrifice, and sharing with those in need.
Eid al-Adha dates, 2027 to 2034
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the date moves earlier every year. Dates for 2026 and 2027 follow the list Diyanet has published; later ones are estimates.

What is done on this day?
The notes come from Diyanet and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam. Where schools differ, the Hanafi view used in Türkiye is given together with the others.
In Diyanet's list of religious days, Eid al-Adha lasts four days, 10 to 13 Dhul Hijjah. The day before is the Day of Arafah.

The Eid prayer is wajib in the Hanafi school and sunnah in the Shafi'i school, and the ruling applies to those on whom the Friday prayer is obligatory. In the Hanafi school it must be prayed in congregation. Someone who cannot join does not have to make it up or pray it alone; praying two or four rak'ahs of Duha (Ishraq) at home is recommended instead.

The Eid prayer time begins once the sun has risen. The hour differs from province to province and is announced by the local muftis.

According to the Diyanet Higher Board of Religious Affairs, a Muslim who is of sound mind, has reached puberty, is not travelling, and owns the nisab amount of wealth beyond basic needs and debts (80.18 grams of 24-carat gold or its value in money or goods) is obliged to offer the sacrifice. The wealth does not have to be productive or held for a year.

The time for the sacrifice begins after the Eid prayer where it is held, and after the Fajr time begins where it is not. In the Hanafi view it lasts until the evening of the third day of Eid, in the Shafi'i view until sunset on the fourth day. It may be done by night or day, though day is preferable.

The tashreeq takbirs are said after the obligatory prayers from the Fajr prayer of the Day of Arafah through the Asr prayer of the fourth day of Eid, that prayer included (see the Day of Arafah page for details).
