Hijri year 1449
The new Hijri year begins with the month of Muharram.
What to know about Islamic New Year
The Islamic New Year falls on the first day of Muharram and opens the Hijri year. The calendar counts from the Prophet's (pbuh) migration from Mecca to Medina, which was adopted as its starting point in the time of Caliph Umar. Muharram is one of the four sacred months honoured in the Quran.
Islamic New Year dates, 2027 to 2034
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the date moves earlier every year. Dates for 2026 and 2027 follow the list Diyanet has published; later ones are estimates.

The notes come from Diyanet and the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam. Where schools differ, the Hanafi view used in Türkiye is given together with the others.
The Hijri calendar counts from the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina. According to the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, the Hijra was made the official starting point of the calendar in the caliphate of Umar (AH 17 / 638 CE), and Muharram became the first month.

Muharram is one of the four sacred (haram) months, with Dhul Qi'dah, Dhul Hijjah and Rajab. The Quran commands respect for these months.

The date follows Diyanet's method for setting Hijri month starts: the crescent counts if it can be seen anywhere on Earth. In Muslim countries that look for it only within their own borders, the date can differ by a day.
